UNSCDF3 Chapter 17- Without Options

Jinnah Town, Quetta, Pakistan
Government Officer Residence
May 14, 2001
1600 Local Time

“Check out this puppy.” Dau lifted a M82A2 sniper rifle from a wooden crate.
“Yeah, I’ll just mind my own business.” Johnson sat in the passenger seat of a Warthog.
“Can you guys seriously help?” Frederick rolled a fuel barrel with Daniels to the Falcon docked on the intersection of the street.
“Yes ma’am.” Johnson hopped off the vehicle and went to push a fuel barrel.
“Hey guys, where’s Hariprasad?” Frederick watched Daniels link cables to the Falcon.
“That way.” Dau pointed at the building right of him with his newly acquired sniper rifle.
There was a sound of a vehicle coming from the corner of a building which heightened Frederick’s defenses.
“Incoming! Get to positions.” Frederick ordered.
The marines quickly got to their nearest cover and readied their guns. A Warthog skidded around the corner and halted to a stop in front of the Falcon.
“It’s Hariprasad!” Dau looked in the scope of his sniper rifle.
“A Gauss hog.” Frederick looked at the unique turret on Hariprasad’s Warthog.
“Ma’am, here’s a surprise.” Hariprasad touched the hood of the vehicle.
“You sure did surprise us.” Johnson got of his cover.
“That thing is beast.” Dau admired the gun with awe.
“How come we don’t see more of these on the fields?” Frederick asked.
“This is an early prototype built by the engineers in High Command. It’s been made to combat the boss zombies, but we haven’t tried it yet.” Hariprasad explained.
“Good, maybe we can take out the choppers with it.” Frederick smiled.
“It doesn’t have that much ammunition. I’d say ten rounds and we’re out.” Hariprasad sighed.
“Oh, that’s a shame.” Frederick looked disappointed.
“Don’t forget we have the other Warthog.” Johnson interrupted.
“Gentlemen, new plan.” Frederick suddenly thought of an idea.
            “Yes LT?” Dau looked interested.
“We’ll leave the Falcon here and drive the two Warthogs to the Pelican’s location. Then we combine out firepower and attempt to rescue Blake and maybe others.” Frederick briefed.
“And what about Zyrok ma’am?” Hariprasad asked.
“We’ll have air support with ground support. I’m sure we can establish a capable means of finding him.” Frederick reasoned.
“Last time I checked, the Russians still have air superiority.” Johnson joked.
“That’s true, but we have better gear now.” Frederick pointed at Dau’s M82A2 and the Gauss hog.
“And one Pelican once we reach our destination.” Hariprasad reminded.
            “Exactly.” Frederick crossed her arms.
“Might I say that we’re a bit…outnumbered?” Johnson spoke truthfully.
“That may be true marine, but we aren’t UNSC marines for no reason. We are good at what we do.” Frederick looked at Johnson with a cold stare.
“Understood ma’am. Cobra Squad’s still with you.” Johnson replied firmly.
            “To the end.” Daniels shouted.
            “Hoorah!” Dau cheered.
“Alright marines, let’s get formed up.” Frederick patted the hood of the Gauss hog.
            “Ma’am?” Johnson asked.
“Daniels, you drive the Gauss hog with Dau. Hariprasad, drive the other Warthog with Johnson on the turret. I’ll take the passenger seat.” Frederick climbed into the seat of the Warthog and looked at her Lock 17 sidearm.
“You heard the LT, get a move on it.” Johnson climbed onto the turret and rotated it to check.
“Time to pop some heads.” Dau smiled mischievously as he got onto the Gauss cannon.
“Don’t waste it.” Daniels hopped into the driver’s seat of the Gauss hog.
            “Nah, trust me.” Dau grinned.
“I bet I’m a better driver than Hariprasad.” Daniels joked.
“We’ll see about that…pilot.” Hariprasad shot a glare and honked his horn.
“May the best operator win then.” Daniels smiled.
“Hey Hariprasad, I think you’ll lose. We’re Spec Ops remember?” Johnson teased.
“True, but I know this terrain better than you do.” Hariprasad countered.
“Alright…alright. Let’s move!” Frederick waved forward.

“How do you like it here?” Dimitri sat at the end of a table eating with Zyrok and Sarah.
“It’s pretty good.” Zyrok replied with his mouth full.
“What about you Sarah?” Dimitri pointed with his fork.
“Good.” Sarah nodded without looking into Dimitri’s eyes.
“Look Zyrok, my men need someone with skills leading them to the Secronom Research Facility.” Dimitri spoke seriously.
“You want to go back down there?” Zyrok stopped eating.
“Well, what’s down there that needs to be destroyed so badly?” Dimitri put down his fork.
“Look Dimitri, don’t go down there. Secronom was researching the Nerotonin drug and it mutated. All I know was that we received a log from the chief scientist asking it to be destroyed to prevent it from reaching the surface.” Zyrok explained briefly.
            “Interesting…” Dimitri rubbed his chin.
“The zombies…they had multi-limbs.” Zyrok described.
“Zyrok, look we’re all about finding a cure for the virus.” Dimitri continued to eat.
            “Really now?’ Zyrok asked uncertainly.
“Yes, if you have information to share, so do we.” Dimitri nodded.
“Such as?’ Zyrok studied his plate and turned to take a quick glimpse of Sarah.
“Such as you folks failing on the containment of the spider zombies.” Dimitri replied.
“What? No!” Zyrok pounded the table.
“You somehow brought it back to North America and now levels are at a critical. Why we want to go down again is to recover their research…do you understand?” Dimitri briefed.
“I don’t believe it.” Zyrok shook his head in disbelief.
“Here’s a report.” Dimitri waved at a soldier holding a folder.
The soldier placed a grey folder in front of Zyrok and walked away. Zyrok opened it and scanned the contents. There were pictures of spider zombies on the streets of San Francisco and the destruction of various UNSC outposts.
“My god.” Zyrok closed his eyes and shut the folder.
“The situation is pretty bad.” Dimitri nodded.
“What can I do to help?” Zyrok offered his knowledge.
“Are you willing to take a team down underground?” Dimitri asked.
            “Research info right?” Zyrok asked.
“Anything else that you can offer us that you know?” Dimitri wondered.
“Secronom was working on a piece of armor.” Zyrok replied.
            “Armor?” Dimitri looked intrigued.
“It appeared to be a prototype, but we’re not sure if it was functional.” Zyrok answered.
“Did the UNSC take it?” Dimitri grabbed a plate of dessert.
“Yeah, my Lieutenant took it. As far as I know, they made it out alive.” Zyrok took his plate of leftovers and set it aside.
Dimitri rubbed his chin and smiled as he enjoyed his dessert and the information Zyrok had given him. Zyrok’s knowledge may be of more use to him than he had hoped for.

“The Pelican should be there.” Hariprasad stood at the adjacent building overlooking the British Embassy.
“Well, I don’t see it.” Johnson took out his binoculars.
“That’s because it’s stored underground in the facility.” Hariprasad pointed at the center courtyard inside the embassy.
“Well, can someone explain why I see the Russians?” Dau looked through the scope of the sniper rifle.
“They’re here?” Frederick took Johnson’s binoculars and looked at two Russians patrolling the outside gates.
“Damn it!” Frederick kicked the railing on the roof in frustration.
“Plans LT?” Daniels crossed his arms.
“Time is running out. We have to split into two teams to get more work done.” Frederick brushed her hair.
“I’m guessing we’re taking the Gauss to Blake’s location?’ Hariprasad guessed.
“Yes, it’s a risk we have to take with the ammo it has.” Frederick nodded.
“What are the teams?” Johnson asked.
“Since Daniels can fly a Pelican, he’ll head with you and Dau.” Frederick looked at Johnson.
“You going to be alright LT?” Dau raised an eyebrow.
“I’ll shoot, Hariprasad drives.” Frederick tossed the car keys to Hariprasad.
“Yes ma’am.” Hariprasad caught the keys with one hand.
“Good, we’re call sign 2-2. Dau, you’re 1-3.” Frederick patted the RaidComm device on her helmet.
“Test, test…do you read?” Daniels tested the RaidComm.
“Loud and clear, over.” Hariprasad replied.
“Guys, why are the Russians scrambling?” Dau looked at the Russians rushing out of the embassy preparing to set up defenses.
“Did they know we’re here?” Frederick waved at the marines to crouch.
“I don’t think so, but I doubt it was a coincidence…” Johnson replied.
“I highly doubt it too.” Frederick agreed.
“Is it me or when we used the RaidComm, the Russians became alert?” Hariprasad voiced his concerns.
“You think the Russians know our frequencies?” Johnson asked.
“Let’s give it a try.” Frederick suggested.
“Hey, are there any UNSC marines out there? I’m lost a couple of blocks south of the embassy. Anyone copy?” Hariprasad played with the RaidComm.
Frederick studied the movement of the Russians and saw them preparing a van full of soldiers. In a few minutes, the van exited the embassy and went onto the streets south of the embassy.
“Yup, RaidComm is out. Now what?” Johnson crossed his arms in frustration.
            “Encryption.” Frederick replied instantaneously.
“That could work…” Daniels rubbed his chin.
“It will work unless we tell others our encryption code.” Frederick removed her helmet and turned some dials on the communications.
            “Code ma’am?” Hariprasad asked.
            “Sierra Pappa 215.” Frederick replied.
“Alright marines, you heard the LT. Encrypt to Sierra Pappa 215.” Johnson ordered.
“Move out marines!” Frederick motioned at the stairwell.

UNSCDF3 Chapter 15- Reunion

Erazi, Kandahar, Afghanistan
Russian Communications Outpost
May 13, 2001
1150 Local Time

Dimitri looked at Blake tied to a chair while being interrogated by his men. Blake was a strong marine and was able to resist most of the torture the Russians had in store for him. Dima tapped Dimitri on the back to bring his attention.
“Sir, the soldier we caught at the British Embassy is ready for interrogation.” Dima reported.
            “Good, show me.” Dimitri ordered.
“Follow me sir.” Dima walked down the hall.
The pair approached a door where a soldier stood guard. Dima nodded and the soldier opened the door. In the center of the room was Zyrok tied to a chair.
“Why am I not surprised?” Dimitri laughed as he immediately recognized the captive marine.
“And should I be surprised?” Zyrok mocked.
“I see the UNSC left you to die.” Dimitri pointed.
“I’m sure they’ll come and find me.” Zyrok answered swiftly.
“I’m not so sure about that. Wouldn’t they have sent a team out to get you? After all Captain Zyrok, you helped your team carry away valuable information.” Dimitri challenged and crossed his arms.
Dimitri had decided to he wanted to do his interrogation differently. Instead of torturing, he was going to lie to Zyrok and make him defect. It would be much easier if he spilled everything instead of forcing out partial and potentially inaccurate info.
“What do you want Dimitri?” Zyrok struggled in his chair.
Dimitri grabbed a chair beside the wall and sat down in front of him. Dima stood next to the door with his arms crossed unsure of what Dimitri’s intentions were.
“Look, I want to help you. I know you’ve been abandoned by your team and you’ve also managed to bring along a girl.” Dimitri spoke softly.
“Don’t you dare hurt her!” Zyrok growled.
“Oh no, we’re not going to hurt her.” Dimitri replied.
“Yeah right, your incompetent soldiers cut her neck in the scuffle.” Zyrok spoke angrily.
“I’m sorry to hear that, I will find whoever it is responsible. Look Zyrok, we don’t hurt women and children.” Dimitri sighed.
“I find that hard to believe.” Zyrok scoffed.
“Fine, as a gesture of goodwill, I will remove your restraints and reunite the girl with you.” Dimitri waved at Dima.
“What do you want? You weren’t a good person the last time I checked.” Zyrok watched as Dima removed his handcuffs.
“People change…just like how the UNSC ditched you.” Dimitri reminded.
“Are you that certain?” Zyrok rubbed his wrists.
“Well, wouldn’t they be here by now?” Dimitri laughed.
            “Where’s Sarah?” Zyrok demanded.
“Oh, that’s her name? I’ll have her sent over here.” Dimitri nodded at Dima.
Dima walked to the door and opened it. He waved his hand out and a soldier escorted Sarah to the door.
            “Sarah!” Zyrok called out.
Sarah turned her head and saw Zyrok and felt a sense of relief. The soldier let Sarah go and she quickly ran towards Zyrok. Zyrok embraced Sarah with a tight hug and crouched to look at her neck.
“I’m so sorry.” Zyrok spoke apologetically.
“Now that the reunion is over, let me offer you accommodation.” Dimitri waved at the door.
“Follow me.” Dima spoke in a flat tone.
Obediently, Zyrok grabbed Sarah’s hand and walked her out. After turning a few corners, the pair had been escorted to a room.
“This is your quarters.” Dima opened the door.
“Not bad…what’s the catch?” Zyrok examined the room.
“We’re locking you here until we trust you.” Dima replied and watched Sarah lie on the bed.
            “Ok.” Zyrok nodded.
“We’ll see you tomorrow.” Dima closed the door and locked it.
Zyrok turned to look at Sarah and then walked to her. He sat down on the bed beside her and yawned. They were both exhausted and confused by the Russians’ act of kindness.
“Sarah, come closer so I can look at your neck.” Zyrok patted the empty spot on the bed.
Sarah crawled up beside Zyrok and raised her head. A cut was visible on the neck, but it was a flesh wound.
“You’re going to be fine. It’s a small cut.” Zyrok assured with comforting eyes.
Sarah looked down at Zyrok and touched her neck. Zyrok noticed a plate of biscuits beside the bed and motioned for Sarah to eat.
“Let’s eat while we can.” Zyrok suggested as he picked up a biscuit.
“Okay.” Sarah began to munch on her biscuit.
Suddenly, the door opened and a soldier walked in with two trays. It contained a can of tinned tuna and the other was a can of tinned salmon. The soldier placed the tray beside Zyrok and walked out.
            “Wow.” Zyrok looked amazed.
The soldier walked back in with two bottles of water and handed it to Zyrok.
“Lunch.” the soldier mumbled and walked out.
“What do you want Sarah?” Zyrok pointed at the tin cans.
            “I don’t know.” Sarah shrugged.
“Well, in Canada we have a lot of salmon.” Zyrok chuckled.
            “I’ll take tuna.” Sarah decided.
“It’s up to you. Salmon has more nutrients than tuna…I think.” Zyrok laughed.
“As long as I’m full, I don’t care.” Sarah smiled.
“Here, take the salmon. I want the best for you.” Zyrok handed the tinned salmon to Sarah.

“Gentlemen, are you ready?” Frederick looked at Dau and Hariprasad sitting on the couch.
“Yes ma’am.” Dau stood up slowly.
“We’ll make them pay.” Johnson walked in the room wielding a Washington 1100.
“I’m ready LT.” Hariprasad gritted his teeth and stood up.
“We’re going to do a quick snatch and grab of the assets if they are still there.” Frederick briefed.
Daniels rushed into the room with his helmet on while holding a Lock 17 pistol.
“Falcon’s ready ma’am.” Daniels holstered his sidearm.
            “Let’s go gentlemen.” Frederick ordered.
“What about Parker and Sears?” Hariprasad asked.
“They’re staying behind to watch base.” Frederick replied.
The group of marines quickly headed for the roof and gathered around the Falcon.
“Ok, listen up marines.” Frederick clapped.
“Dau and Hariprasad, get on either side of the mounted turrets. Daniels, get it started up. Hariprasad, take a seat, we’ll be needing you soon.” Frederick commanded.
“Understood.” Daniels rushed into the cockpit and closed the hatch.
Frederick watched as the marines got into their positions before setting foot on the aircraft. Once she was in, Daniels lifted the Falcon off the ground and steered right. From a distance, the shores littered with ship debris and bodies.
“What a mess…” Dau examined the distant shores.
            “A slaughter.” Johnson replied.
“I knew people on that ship.” Dau spoke with a hardened look.
            “We all did.” Johnson sighed.
“Alright, we’re going to increase altitude.” Daniels chirped on the comms.
Daniels ascended the Falcon into a steady climb until it was just below the clouds. The wind was choppy, but the aircraft remained leveled. From the ground up, the Falcon looked like a small speck in the sky hiding from any potential threats.

UNSCDF3 Chapter 14- Experienced Soldiers

Downtown Kandahar, Kandahar, Afghanistan
British Embassy
May 12, 2001
1400 Local Time

“Almost done yet?” Sarah shouted from outside the room.
Zyrok stood in the shower as warm water trickled down his dirty body. The pair had managed to find a section of the embassy that was untouched with the facilities still running. He had been showering for well over ten minutes in the change room with Sarah keeping guard outside.
“You’ll get your turn Sarah!” Zyrok hollered.
“You’re going to use up all the water!” Sarah pouted.
Zyrok ran his fingers through his hair as he tried to straighten his hair. He grabbed a nearby soap and applied it to his arms. Dirt and blood turned the soap into brown bubbly foam and dripped to the ground. The hot water splashed against the ground and created a little steam and some condensation on the walls. Zyrok was relaxed and almost carefree. This was the break that he had been looking for ever since he was out in Afghanistan by himself. The shower was washing his past behind him and a new sense of hope renewed his strength. Feeling satisfied, Zyrok turned off the shower and stepped out whilst grabbing a towel. The hot water had warmed up the air and the room that was cold was no longer more.
“Sarah, I’m done.” Zyrok dried himself with the towel and grabbed a new set of clothes hanging on the wall in front of him.
It was a standard dress shirt and trousers he had acquired from one of the lockers. The shirt was a good fit, but the pants were too short. They were clean so Zyrok wore the trousers with a smirk.
“Maybe I’ll find another one later.” Zyrok buttoned his dress shirt.
Zyrok walked to the door while drying his hair with a towel. Sarah was sitting down on a bench swinging her legs with her arms crossed.
            “Finally.” Sarah jumped up.
“Don’t take too long.” Zyrok watched as Sarah closed the door.
He sat down on the bench and looked at a fully loaded M16 and Lock 17 he had found on one of the corpses. He removed the magazine from the M16 and looked inside the gun. He pulled the firing mechanism back and began to disassemble it for cleaning. He was bored and had nothing else to do than to sit and wait until Sarah was done taking a shower. From the corner of his eye, the main door into the change room creaked open a bit and closed back.
“Hello?” Zyrok stood up and held the Lock 17 in front of him.
The only sound Zyrok could hear was the sound of the shower and Sarah quietly humming in a melodious tune. Zyrok quickly holstered his sidearm and began to reassemble the M16. He wasn’t going to scout, but he wanted to be prepared to defend in the event that something did occur. In his gut feeling, something wasn’t feeling right. As Zyrok placed the magazine back into the M16 and cocked it, the lights suddenly turned off. Sarah cried out loud and Zyrok quickly pushed the door to the shower room open. Keeping his face forward to the main door, he turned on his flashlight and shone it behind him without looking.
“Sarah, get dressed quickly. Get my flashlight.” Zyrok clicked on his flashlight on and off.
            “Ok.” Sarah whispered.
Zyrok could feel Sarah’s wet hands touch his as she took the flashlight from behind him.
“Close the door and get dressed.” Zyrok walked forward to allow Sarah to close the shower room door.
Once the door clicked shut and Sarah was getting dressed, Zyrok steadied his M16 and slowly walked to the main door. Something wasn’t right about the door because of the shadows underneath it. It didn’t seem like the walking of an infected, but rather of a trained soldier preparing to clear a room. As Zyrok walked a step closer, he heard a beeping sound and he quickly turned his head just in time as the door exploded.
“Sarah! Run!” Zyrok shouted as he rolled for cover.
Just as Zyrok had expected, the Russians had somehow found them in the British Embassy. Maybe, there were soldiers already stationed here and that is why the facilities worked. Zyrok stuck his head out of cover behind the lockers and heard a series of gunshots. He ducked back into cover and looked at his weapons. He was no match for the Russians, but he had to protect Sarah. He slid to the next cover while spraying a light cover. A flashbang grenade rolled onto the ground in front of him and he quickly covered his eyes. The deafening bang briefly stunned Zyrok, but he quickly recovered just in time to shoot his gun at a Russian soldier.
“Sarah! Run!” Zyrok shouted again as he saw more soldiers pour in.
The room was lit up by the firing of guns and a smoke grenade which the Russians had tossed in. Zyrok coughed loudly and attempted to maintain his alertness. Suddenly, he heard a scream from behind him.
“Sarah.” Zyrok immediately thought and had his eyes filled with fear.
Using Sarah’s scream as his focus, Zyrok dashed into the change room and noticed a soldier holding Sarah and muffling her screams of help. Zyrok pointed his gun at the soldier and noticed he had a combat knife to her throat.
“Let her go.” Zyrok commanded angrily.
“Drop your weapon or I slit her throat.” the Russian soldier countered.
“She’s just a child.” Zyrok held his gun firmly.
A pistol click was heard at the back of Zyrok’s head. Before, he was about to shoot Sarah’s captor, but now he didn’t stand a chance to attempt a rescue.
“You are a coward.” Zyrok felt his finger tingle on the trigger.
“No, I’m a Russian and I don’t bluff.” the Russian pressed the blade on the neck of Sarah.
From Sarah’s eyes, she was scared and unsure of what to do. The blade had cut the outer layer of her skin and a trickle of blood oozed onto the knife. Zyrok had no choice but to surrender.
“Alright, don’t hurt her please. I’ll drop the gun.” Zyrok removed his finger off the trigger.
“On the floor and kick your gun away.” the soldier ordered.
Zyrok listened obediently and placed the M16 to the ground. Then, he kicked it with one foot and held his hands up.
            “Done.” Zyrok announced.
Sarah’s eyes widened in horror as she saw something come up behind Zyrok. A Russian bashed his gun at the back of Zyrok’s head and knocked him out cold. Sarah tried to scream, but her mouth was covered. No one was going to protect her from the Russians now. She watched as two soldiers dragged Zyrok’s body out of the room and then saw another soldier with a cloth. Before she knew what was happening, the soldier gagged her mouth and placed a black hood over her head.

UNSCDF2 Epilogue Version 1.1

San Francisco, California, USA
UNSC San Francisco Outpost
April 23, 2001
2100 Local Time

Red lights flashed inside the whole Outpost and a siren blared through the complex. Cookson rushed through the dark foggy fields armed with a M16. In the distant, gunshots echoed the fields and screams were heard. A few hours after Echo 21 landed back to the Outpost, no one had bothered to check up on each other to see how everyone was doing. Forester called it a night and people went their ways. There was one thing they had left out to check. It was Tanya, unknown to the marines and covered in blood stained clothes, she had been hiding a bite from a spider she had contracted prior to Zyrok’s rescue. Now Tanya had mutated into a spider zombie and was infecting the marines and civilians at the Outpost. The good thing was that Cookson and May had killed the infected Tanya, but the bad thing was that she had turned a good amount of humans into her kind. The UNSC Outpost was literally swarmed with spider zombies and the marines had lost control. Now, Cookson was running to the building where Sarah lived.
“Sarah!” Cookson called out loudly down the halls.
A figure ran towards Cookson and pointed his flashlight at Cookson’s face.
“Don’t shoot.” Cookson blocked the blinding light with his hand and recognized the figure to be Fields.
“What the hell are those things?” Fields looked at Cookson with a frightened look.
“Spiders…or so we call it. We thought we had contained it back at Afghanistan, but we didn’t.” Cookson handed his Lock 17 pistol to Fields.
“Those things are everywhere. Thanks.” Fields took Cookson’s pistol gratefully.
            “Where’s Sarah?” Cookson asked.
“I don’t know. We got split up. Last I saw her was with Fisher one floor up.” Fields replied.
“Come on man, let’s find her.” Cookson ran up the stairs.
As the pair reached the floor, bodies were everywhere. Two gunshots fired at the end of the dark hall and a feminine scream was heard.
“Sarah!” Cookson shouted as he sprinted towards the scream.
Fields quickly ran behind him while keeping alert of his surroundings for any zombies. As Cookson charged into the room where the scream came from, a spider zombie was munching on a woman. Cookson fired three rounds into the back of its head and ran up beside the spider’s victim. It was Fisher and she was half alive as blood gushed out of her neck.
“Sarah’s in the…next room….kill me…before I turn.” Fisher coughed on her own blood before she slowly closed her eyes.
“Thank you Fisher for taking care of my wife. I’m sorry it had to go down this way.” Cookson aimed his M16 at Fisher’s forehead and fired once.
Cookson frowned and quickly went to the next door. He attempted to open the door, but it was jammed from behind.
            “Sarah?” Cookson called out loudly.
“Sarah, you in there?” Fields shouted and pounded on the door.
“Is that you Mike?” a quiet voice was heard from behind the door.
“It’s me Mike and Fields. Open the door and let’s get out of here.” Cookson replied softly.
“Okay.” Sarah mumbled as she slowly removed the barricade behind the door.
Sarah opened the door and felt a sense of security as she saw her husband.
“It’s so good to see you dear.” Cookson hugged Sarah tightly.
“Guys…we got to go.” Fields saw two spiders walk up the stairs.
“Other stairs…there.” Sarah pointed at a set of stairs a few meters down the hall.
“Good girl.” Cookson smiled at Sarah.
The three ran down the stairs and exited the building and back into the foggy fields.
“Anyone from Jackal Squadron or Echo Squad copy?” Cookson spoke on the RaidComm.
“This is Forester here with Echo. We’ve got a Pelican docked next to the main gates. Where are you Cookson?” Forester responded.
“We’re at the fields. It’s too foggy to make out where the gates are.” Cookson replied.
“Hey Cookson, Frederick is driving around the Outpost looking for survivors to evacuate. Activate your transponder.” May interrupted on the RaidComm.
“Copy, will do.” Cookson replied and pressed a button on his utility belt.
“Cookson, I see your location. Sit tight.” Frederick spoke on the RaidComm.
From the mist of the fog, three spiders ran towards them. Cookson fired wildly while Fields squeezed off a couple of rounds. Out of nowhere, two headlights appeared from behind the spiders and Frederick’s troop transport Warthog splattered the zombie into pieces.
“Get on.” Frederick honked the horn.
Cookson noticed Christopher and Hariprasad seated in the back with two civilians. As Cookson, Fields, and Sarah climbed onto the back of the Warthog, a couple of spiders ran onto the fields.
“Go! Go! Go!” Christopher shouted as he fired off a few rounds from his pistol.
The Warthog sped through the fields and then skidded a turn as Frederick nearly hit a stationary Warthog hidden in the thick fog. Frederick continued driving as she looked at her datapad on the dashboard of her vehicle. She was nearing the main gates where the Pelican was waiting.
“Get to the Pelican now!” Forester yelled as the troop transport Warthog came into view.
Taylor was mounted on the M60 turret holding the line as hundreds of spiders crawled towards them. The minute everyone was inside, Pruett and Foo lifted the Pelican up just as the turret ran out of ammunition.
“Get to High Command. They’ll need to know about this.” Forester ordered.
From the air, the UNSC Outpost was pitch black half covered by the thick fog. Faint screams and gunshots could be heard in the distant.
“We couldn’t have saved everyone.” Frederick looked below while turning to look at Cookson and Sarah.
            “I know that…” Cookson sighed.
“Vickers, Patrick, and Fisher…did they make it?” Sarah asked as she looked around.
“I’m sorry Sarah, they didn’t.” Fields replied apologetically.
“Hey Sarah…” Cookson eyed Sarah and reached into his pocket.
            “Yeah Mike?” Sarah replied softly.
“Do you remember a Charlie?” Cookson fished out Zyrok’s UNSC dog tags.
            “Um…” Sarah scratched her head.
“Well, he was our commanding officer for our operation back in Afghanistan. He was the guy who joined the UNSC to look for you…and he wanted you to have this.” Cookson handed Sarah Zyrok’s UNSC dog tags and the poem he had written for her.
“Oh…I remember now.” Sarah looked at the UNSC dog tags and saw the name “Charlie Chu (Zyrok)” engraved on it.
Sarah looked at the piece of paper Cookson handed her and read the poem quietly. The face of Sarah turned to sadness as she finished the poem and looked at the dog tags.
“Charlie also wanted me to tell you that he loved you till the very end.” Cookson stumbled on the words.
“I know…I know…” Sarah took the UNSC dog tags and Zyrok’s poem and tucked it under her jacket as a tear trickled down her warm beautiful face.

UNSCDF2 Chapter 37- Remember the Heroes

Reygi, Kandahar, Afghanistan
Secronom Research Facility
April 21, 2001
2310 Local Time

“Spread out, watch your sectors!” Zyrok panned his flashlight on his XM8 at the dark halls.
Nevarez held a SA80 and scanned the room beside them while Frederick waved at her team to follow her as Zyrok walked down the hall.
“Frederick, central room is this one. Go and activate that self-destruct. We’ll meet at the stairwell once we’re done.” Zyrok pointed at a door marked “B5535”.
“Okay Zyrok. We’ll meet at the stairwell once we’re all done.” Frederick replied.
Frederick took out her datapad and began to prepare for another system bypass while Cookson unscrewed the panel. Zyrok took a quick glance at Frederick before continuing down the eerie halls. After a short walk, the three marines made their way to B5532 and stopped as they heard the growls and moans of zombies in the room next door.
“Get ready gentlemen.” Zyrok shifted his gaze from his gun to his men as he double checked the magazine.
            “Ready.” Nevarez replied quietly.
“All set Captain.” Schmidt patted his XM8.
Zyrok waved his arm in a forward motion and the marines silently shuffled in a single file. Zyrok’s flashlight illuminated the room and noticed four spiders on the ceiling. Immediately after shining the light at the zombies, Zyrok didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger. While Zyrok fired a fury of bullets into the closest zombie’s chest, Schmidt and Nevarez took care of the normal zombies strolling about in the room. Bullets flew everywhere and muzzle flashes lit the room up. It was a massacre of zombies as the three marines peppered the undead to oblivion. In a matter of minutes, the UNSC marines had cleared the room with their new weapons. Blood, guts, and brains were everywhere on the walls, tables, and computers.
            “Hello?” Zyrok called out.
“I’m here.” Tanya crawled out from behind a metal desk covered in blood.
“Did we shoot you?” Zyrok wondered.
“No, I had to bash the zombies with an iron pipe as I was waiting for you. There were so many of them.” Tanya shivered.
            “Are you okay?” Nevarez asked.
“I’m okay…” Tanya wiped blood off her face.
“Take this.” Zyrok offered Tanya his water bottle.
“Thanks.” Tanya took the bottle graciously and poured the bottle over her head.
The water washed the blood-caked face and dripped into red puddles at Tanya’s feet.
“Let’s get out of here.” Nevarez suggested.
            “I feel cold.” Tanya shivered.
“The adrenaline rush must be over.” Zyrok exclaimed.
“Zyrok, this is Frederick here. We are about to set the self-destruct sequence. Are you guys done?” Frederick spoke on the RaidComm.
“Yeah, we’ve just got the soldier.” Zyrok replied.
            “Tanya…name’s Tanya.” Tanya spoke quietly.
“Ok, copy that. Once we prime the sequence, we only have ten minutes to get out of here or we’ll be history.” Frederick replied.
“Roger, regroup at the stairwell when you activate. We’ll be heading there now.” Zyrok looked at his watch.
“Got it.” Frederick ended the RaidComm transmission.
Zyrok waved at Tanya and his marines to hurry out of the room. As the team quickly jogged towards the stairwell, red lights began to flash at the top of each door.
“Attention! Attention! Quarantine procedures Pappa Romeo Yankee initiated. All personnel, please evacuate. Self-destruct in ten minutes.” the alarm blared.
“Move it marines!” Frederick called out at the end of the hallway as Zyrok and his team entered the stairwell.
“Come on.” Nevarez replied slightly agitated as the alarm blared.
Zyrok held the door open for Frederick’s team to get inside and then looked up the stairs.
“Double time marines. Let’s go. Go!” Zyrok ran up the stairs to take point.
After a few flight of stairs, the group had reached the second floor.
“I think the zombies are on this floor too.” Schmidt looked out the stairwell doors and heard a thundering of footsteps.
“Attention! Attention! Quarantine procedures Pappa Romeo Yankee has been initiated. All personnel, please evacuate. Self-destruct in five minutes.” the alarm blared.
“Let’s get going.” Zyrok ran the last flight of stairs and pushed the stairwell doors to the first floor open.
The team of marines sprinted down the hall and came to the blast door. The door beeped and slowly began to close.
“Blast doors closing. Blast doors closing.” the panel on the door spoke as the red lights flashed on the wall.
The marines looked at the door and quickly got through and pressed the elevator button. After a few seconds of waiting, the elevator the elevator doors opened and five militia soldiers stood inside armed with AK47s. Hariprasad showed no hesitation as he fully unloaded his M60 into the crowd.
“Crowd control…check.” Hariprasad joked as he saw the pile of bodies in the elevator he had created.
            “Get inside people.” Frederick ordered.
Once the marines got inside, Zyrok pounded on the elevator button.
“Attention all personnel! Quarantine procedures in effect. Self-destruct in three minutes.” the alarm blared inside the elevator as the elevator ascended.
“This is going to be close.” Frederick looked at her watch.

*          *          *

“Okay marines. We are going to extract our marines out of here. Sierra 12, you ready?” Forester called out on the RaidComm in the cockpit of Kilo 11 as another Pelican flew beside them in the dark sky.
“All geared up and ready Forester.” Foo spoke on the RaidComm.
“Light them up!” Forester commanded and pointed at the vehicles parked beside the Secronom Research Facility.
“Got it.” Pruett acknowledged and fired three missiles at various vehicles.
Unbeknownst to the marines, the Russians had turned the defenses back online. A couple of flares flew into the sky and countered the missile assault. In return, the sentry guns turned and aimed at the sky.
“Damn, the defenses are online.” Pruett swerved the Pelican as the sentry guns fired a blaze of bullets.
“Take the guns out.” Forester ordered.
“Can’t, the flares will counter the missiles.” Pruett spoke with concern.
“Use the GAU-19. Lay down a heavy assault on each gun.” Forester pointed at a button.
Pruett flipped the button and the GAU-19 barrel began to spin. He looked at the targeting console and aimed the gun at one sentry gun. He fired and a hail of bullets pelleted the sentry gun and destroyed it. Suddenly, out of nowhere, the ground shifted and a missile flew up into the sky.
“We got a target lock.” Pruett reported as his computer beeped rapidly.
“Deploying counter measures.” Forester pressed a button on the console.
“It’s useless!” Pruett replied as the missile flew past the flares.
As the missile got closer to the Pelican, one missile appeared from the side and slammed into it. A bright and violent explosion flashed in the sky.
“What was that?” Forester looked out the window.
“Kilo 11, we’ve got your back.” Foo spoke on the RaidComm.
“Thanks Foo.” Pruett gave his appreciation.
“Get the other guns out.” Forester directed.
“Yes ma’am.” Pruett nodded and targeted another sentry gun.
Once again, as the sentry gun got destroyed, another missile launched from the ground into the sky, but was easily taken out by Sierra 12’s missile.
“You know the drill now marines! Get on it.” Forester spoke on the RaidComm as she saw a pattern.
One by one, the sentry guns got taken out by Kilo 11’s GAU-19 while Sierra 12 provided missile assistance. In a matter of minutes, the only defense left for the Russian and the militia force were the flares.
“Sierra 12, switch roles. We’ll be using missiles to lure out the location of the countermeasure defenses while you use your turret. Our GAU-19 is low on ammo.” Pruett spoke on the RaidComm.
“Copy Kilo 11.” Foo spoke in a flat tone of voice.
Pruett fired a missile at a pickup truck with a mounted turret and noticed a couple of flares flew into the air beside the facility. The missile missed its mark and hit the ground as the flares distracted its targeting system.
“I see the flares.” Foo reported on the RaidComm.
“Take them out Foo.” Forester ordered.
Forester looked to her right as a torrent of bullets lit the sky up as Foo fired his Pelican’s GAU-19 at the location of the flares. Smoke erupted as the armor piercing rounds hit the defense unit on the ground.
“Target down.” Foo reported on the RaidComm with satisfaction in his voice.
“Neutralize all ground assets.” Forester commanded.
Pruett nodded and fired a hail storm of missiles to the ground below him. A chain of explosions lit the dark sky to daylight and tore through the silence. Foo fired his remaining missiles in his missile pod at the rooftop where militia hid with RPGs. The building shook as a barrage of missiles damaged the foundations.
“Take this.” Pruett squeezed the trigger and a waved of bullets slammed into the windows of the facility.
The Russians and the militia were taking a beating and they had no more defensive plays. Debris and bodies scattered the cold dusty grounds. Just when the UNSC was about to celebrate their victory, a fleet of missiles flew out of the night sky and slammed into the rear thrusters of Sierra 12.
“Mayday! Mayday! This is Sierra 12, we are hit and we are going down!” Foo broadcasted on the RaidComm.
As fire and smoke erupted from the back of Sierra 12, Forester looked at the night sky and made out a dark shadow.
“What is that?” Forester pointed at the shadow.
“I don’t see anything on the radar.” Pruett tapped his radar on the console.
Sierra 12 slowly spun out of control as the hull began to lose its integrity. Seconds later, the Pelican crashed to the ground and skidded on the pavement. Two missiles fired from the shadow and flew towards Kilo 11. Forester showed no fear as she immediately released the countermeasures and hopped into the co-pilot’s seat. The missiles hit the flares and flung hot searing shrapnel to the Pelican’s side.
“I’m taking over.” Forester bucked herself to the seat and grabbed a headset.
“Yes ma’am.” Pruett nodded and gave the controls over to Forester.
Forester steered the Pelican to face the threat and pressed a button above her.
“Friend or foe identification activated.” the computer spoke.
            “Oh…that!” Pruett exclaimed.
“If it’s in the air, it’s all foes now. Sierra 12 is on the ground.” Forester replied.
The radar on the console turned to a different image as it displayed different infrared signatures nearby the Pelican.
“I’ll isolate it so it removes ground assets.” Pruett turned some dials above him.
“Thanks.” Forester thanked and watched as another missile flew at them.
Forester targeted the incoming missile with her consoles and fired the GAU-19. A few hundred bullets sprayed into the air and hit the missile causing it to go off in midair.
“Holy shit…that’s a Mil Mi-24 assault chopper.” Pruett looked at the infrared signature on the screen.
“God damn Russians!” Forester sped the Pelican towards the helicopter while firing the GAU-19 to light up the sky.
As the Mi-24 came into view, Forester noticed that the pilot was very skilled. While Forester sprayed the covering fire, the Russians pilots had missile locked onto her. Two missiles launched from the Mi-24 and flew directly towards the Pelican.
            “Missiles incoming!” Pruett exclaimed.
Pruett knew it was too late to pull off any defensive plays and the time to do anything was restricted by the distance. However, what Pruett didn’t know was that Forester was a skilled pilot. Her years of training before she entered High Command had taught her discipline and critical thinking skills. Forester immediately turned off the vertical thrusters and let the Pelican drop out of the sky using gravity to assist her fall. Once the Pelican came deadly close to the ground, Forester pushed the vertical thrusters to the maximum limit and accelerated the Pelican forward. This sudden drop and acceleration made the missiles lose track of its target and slammed to the ground.
“Woah…” Pruett was partially shocked and speechless by Forester’s stunt.
Forester angled the Pelican and adjusted its turret at the Mi-24 helicopter. She fired one missile and noticed it was the last one. The Russian pilots were smart as they launched their countermeasures and blocked the hit. Using the flares as a distraction, the Mi-24 swerved to face the Pelican with its guns ready. Forester fired the GAU-19 and noticed it was out of ammunition.
“Get on the M60 turret.” Forester commanded as she turned the Pelican sideways.
Pruett rushed to the rear of the Pelican and looked at the overhead compartments.
“Hurry Pruett! What are you doing?” Forester felt a wave of bullets hit the Pelican’s body.
“Hang on…” Pruett sifted through the items.
There were medic kits, folders, ammunition, and a RG6 grenade launcher.
“This will do!” Pruett fished out the weapon and wielded it.
“I’ll fly, you shoot.” Forester pressed a button on her console to release the hatch at the rear of the Pelican.
Pruett felt a sudden gust of wind blow at him followed by the sounds of bullets whizzing.
“He’s on my six now. Get him.” Forester hollered.
Pruett fired two grenades out the back, but missed as the distance between him and the Mi-24 was too great.
“He’s too far. I’ve got a few shots left.” Pruett shouted and ducked down as a bullet struck a seat beside him.
“Hang on!” Forester reversed the throttle and jerked the Pelican upwards.
The hull of the Pelican groaned as it went against gravity, but Forester was able to maintain a steady upwards decent. In a split second, the Mi-24 was immediately below the Pelican with its deadly rotors spinning in the darkness.
“Now!” Forester released the vertical thrusters.
Pruett aimed the RG6 grenade launcher and fired three grenades below him. The first grenade went a little to the left and missed its mark, but the other two slammed into the rotors of death and exploded. The explosion consumed the Mi-24 into a ball of fire and slammed into the ground like a meteorite.
“Hell yeah!” Forester cheered as she leveled the Pelican.
“Kilo 11, this is Foo here. We’ve survived the crash, but request immediate assistance!” Foo spoke on the RaidComm.
“Copy, coming for pickup on site.” Forester steered the Pelican towards the downed Pelican.
Pruett slung the RG6 to his back and mounted himself on the M60 turret. As Kilo 11 neared the crash site, some militia hiding behind destroyed vehicles gave the marines on the ground a hard time. Forester turned the Pelican so Pruett could lay down a blanket of fire. The moment Pruett had the hostiles in his sights, he fired the M60 without mercy. Forester descended the Pelican just a meter above the ground next to the downed Sierra 12. Foo and May ran towards Kilo 11 while Pruett laid a heavy suppressive fire. As soon as the marines got on, Pruett got off the turret and pulled the lever to close the hatch. Foo ran inside the cockpit and sat in the pilot’s seat.
“Thanks for the save.” Foo gave his appreciation.
“Here, take cover.” Forester grinned as she handed the controls to Foo and walked out of the Pelican.
“Nice kill with the grenade launcher.” May complimented Pruett as she sat down on a seat to rest.
“Thanks.” Pruett closed his eyes for a brief moment to relax.
“That was quite a stunt you pulled.” May eyed Forester with respect.
“High Command has its purposes.” Forester replied.

*          *          *

“Any UNSC personnel copy?” Frederick broadcasted on the RaidComm as she saw a crashed Pelican engulfed in flames as she looked out the window from the first floor.
Zyrok and Frederick’s marines had slaughtered the Russian soldiers and militia forces in their path.
“Frederick, is that you? We’re aboard Pelican Kilo 11 one kilometer away from the facility. How copy?” May spoke on the RaidComm with surprise in her voice.
“We need extraction. This place is going to blow.” Frederick replied as the alarm blared in the background.
“Head for the roofs. We’ll pick you up from there.” May replied.
“Copy, on our way. Make it quick!” Frederick commanded as she looked at the marines.
Frederick pointed at the stairwell and waved at the marines to follow. Suddenly, Reid opened the door and fell to the ground.
“Reid!” Zyrok exclaimed as he saw Reid dripping blood from his chest.
Reid coughed heavily and grasped onto Zyrok’s arms.
“We have to go.” Zyrok slung one of Reid’s arms over his back.
“Attention! All personnel must now evacuate. Self-destruct in one minute thirty seconds.” the alarm blared.
As the marines rapidly got to the roof while Zyrok and Nevarez assisted Reid, one soldier walked out of the stairwell with his AK47 ready to fire. Reid noticed that Cookson was unaware and unprepared of the soldier aiming his gun and had a sudden change of heart. Reid wasn’t going back to the UNSC if he had made it out alive. His injuries were slowing everyone and he had betrayed the marines who trusted him. With a final act of redemption and true UNSC heroism, he lunged himself into the line of fire. Three rounds hit him square in the chest and he collapsed. Cookson quickly spun around and fired off four rounds from his Lock 17 sidearm. The soldier collapsed to the ground and Cookson knelt beside Reid.
            “No.” Cookson cried.
Reid coughed blood and wheezed as his lungs were pierced.
“Tell Sarah that I’m sorry for everything.” Reid spoke with his dying breath.
“We got to go now!” Frederick hollered.
Still shocked by Reid’s death and his last words, Cookson snatched Reid’s dog tags and quickly ran to the rest of the group on instinct as the alarm blared loudly.
“We’re going to make it!” Schmidt exclaimed as they jumped into the rear of the Pelican docked beside the stairwell.
“Self-destruct in fifteen…fourteen…” the alarm sounded.
The Pelican slowly lifted up a couple of meters when suddenly the alarm lights shut off.
“Self-destruct sequence cancelled by manual override.” the alarm blared.
            “No.” Frederick stomped the ground.
“The Russians…they are going to release the zombies.” Nevarez cried in horror.
“It must be Dimitri.” Tanya looked at the roof a couple of meters below.
“Someone has to reactivate it and it’s going to be a one-way trip.” Frederick replied.
“You guys are not going anywhere. Frederick has the armor High Command wants on herself and Forester is in High Command. The rest of you can live to fight another day. My time is done.” Zyrok concluded.
“What?” Nevarez and Hariprasad replied in unison.
“Pruett and Foo, fly us out of here. That’s an order!” Zyrok shouted as he clipped on a belt of ammunition.
“Yes sir.” Pruett replied solemnly unable to disobey.
The Pelican ascended slowly and the roof was becoming more distant.
“We have to make it look like we left.” Zyrok slung a backpack to his back that was stored under a seat.
“Forester and Frederick, you are in command now. Take these marines home to safety. Cookson, here.” Zyrok shouted and walked to Cookson with a sad smile.
            “Yes Zyrok?” Cookson asked.
“It’s Charlie. Please tell Sarah that I loved her till the very end.” Zyrok reached into his pocket on his chest and pulled out a piece of wrinkled paper.
            “What’s that?” Cookson exclaimed.
“For her.” Zyrok ripped off his UNSC dog tag and handed it to Cookson along with the paper.
With that, a tear streaked down Zyrok’s dusty face and he walked to the edge of the Pelican. The night was calm as the wind blew gusts of warm air into Zyrok’s face. He looked down at the roof and jumped off.
“Wait….Charlie!” Frederick called out, but was too late as the darkness swallowed Zyrok into the dark night.
From the fire and smoke on the rooftop, a parachute was slightly visible as it slowly landed onto the roof.
“Zyrok…he didn’t take his helmet.” Nevarez looked at the seat where Zyrok took the parachute and noticed his helmet underneath it.
At the edge of the Pelican, the marines could make out a dark figure running past some debris on the roof before entering the stairwell.
“Incoming!” Pruett noticed two Mil Mi-24 helicopters appearing on the infrared scanner heading towards the facility.
“We got to take them out.” Frederick replied.
“We are all out of ammo. We’re retreating. Let’s hope Zyrok destroys the facility.” Forester replied and prayed.
            “He’ll do it.” Nevarez assured.
“We’re getting to safety. That’s what Zyrok wanted.” Forester ordered Pruett.
“Got it.” Pruett pushed the throttle forward.
The Pelican flew away from the facility while the Mil Mi-24 helicopters circled the building looking for targets. As the Pelican slowly lost sight of the facility from its rear, a faint rumble and boom was heard. The facility exploded and lit a small flash of lit just enough for the marines to see from far away.
“He did it!” Schmidt and May cheered.
“He did it for Sarah.” Cookson sat in his seat as he read the writings on the piece of paper.
It was written by hand saying:
“Your glistening hair,
Flutters so freely in the warm air.
Those soft carefree smiles,
Always been seen in thousand miles.
Your good caring heart,
Takes my hard body armor apart.
I like who you are,
So don’t change that no matter how far.
Please remember me,
Because I love you…I hope you see.”

“He was not only a hero, but a great man.” Frederick sighed.
“A good friend too.” Pruett spoke sadly.
“A man of his words.” Tanya spoke tiredly and shivered as the air grew colder.
“Indeed he was.” Frederick agreed and then walked up next to the hatch and pulled the lever.
As the Pelican neared Fire Team Kilo’s camp, a couple of vehicles mounted with soldiers attacked the UNSC base. Pruett noticed the marines on site camped out in the hangar with their Pelican with a troop pod. He quickly landed next to it and released the hatch.
            “Go! Go! Go!” Forester hustled.
“Glad to see you guys back.” Sears ran up beside the Pelican wielding a SA80.
“Choppers inbound!” Taylor looked at the night sky and heard spinning of rotors.
“Abandon base. Our operation is done. Everyone get to the Pelican with the troop pod.” Forester commanded.
“What about Kilo 11?” Sears asked.
“There’s no ammo and not enough fuel to get far.” Forester waved at the marines.
All the marines including Tanya quickly boarded the other Pelican marked “Echo 21” on its side.
“Liftoff.” Pruett activated the engines and lifted the Pelican.
By the time the Pelican reached twenty meters in the air, the militia had swarmed the camp with vehicles.
            “Where to ma’am?” Foo asked.
“San Francisco. Full speed ahead, the choppers are almost here.” Forester replied.
“Where’s Zyrok?” Casey looked amongst the seated marines.
“Yeah? Where is he?” Taylor glanced as well.
“He…didn’t make it.” Cookson held Zyrok’s UNSC dog tags firmly in his fist.
“Ahh.” Casey sighed and hit the seat next to him angrily.
“Altitude increasing, closing hatch.” Foo pressed a button on the console.
            “We’re homebound.” Schmidt breathed relied.
“Zyrok’s not coming home.” Taylor shook his head.
“A lot of people are not coming home. They all made sacrifices and died as heroes for mankind.” Frederick reminded.
“Yeah…a hero…” Cookson muttered as he stared at Zyrok’s poem.
